TIME Magazine have announced the nominees for their annual ‘Person of the Year’ award, and the list of 38 reflects quite a year of history that was 2012.

Unsurprisingly, the jailed members of Pussy Riot have been put up for nomination, given their strong political statements (and punishment) that transpired this year. Speaking of the band, TIME wrote  ”In a year when so many voices of liberty and dissent have suffered harsh retribution, the Russian feminist punk group Pussy Riot has paid a particularly steep price for provocative political expression.”

Other nominees include Barack Obama, Austrian daredevil Felix Baumgauter, Apple CEO Tim Cook, Fifty Shades Of Grey author EL James, Bill and Hillary Clinton, and the Higgs Boson particle. The only other musicians that appear on the list are Jay-Z and Korean sensation PSY.

TIME’s 2012 Person of the Year will be revealed on DEcember 21, as chosen by the editor’s of the magazine. A ‘People’s Choice’ Person of the Year will also be unvieled a week earlier, based on votes from the public on TIME’s website.
