It has been announced today that Comedy Central host, and long-time Lord of the Rings fan, Steven Colbert, will make an appearance in Peter Jackson’s upcoming prequel to the Rings series, The Hobbit.

It is unclear what role Colbert will play, however it has been confirmed that he will not be appearing in the first film due out on November 14th. He will either be starring in the sequel Desolation of Smaug, out December 13, 2013, or There and Back Again, out July 18, 2014.

Colbert hinted at his involvement in the film in November’s issue of Playboy saying, “Peter Jackson invited me to the set last year. I flew out and watched hem short some scenes and went to some locations. I saw a 25-minute cut, and it was amazing. Jackson knows I’m a big fan of the films.”

When asked if he was hired as an extra, Colbert smiled, and in response to the question. “Are you telling us you’re in the Hobbit movie?” he coyly replied saying, “Could be.”
