Alas, The Ocean brings back the sound of late 60s folk music (think Simon and Garfunkel, Nick Drake, Donovan), but instead of cashing in on nostalgia, the group fills their sound with a convincing personality, along the lines of acts such as Ben Howard, Damien Rice, The Tallest Man On Earth.
“Live sessions EP” is already a pretty self-explanatory title for this release, showcasing the Alberta indie-folk ensamble in a stripped-down, intimate live setting that reminds how a powerful song does not really need much more than a warm guitar and heartfelt vocals to truly stick out.
The 5 tracks featured in the EP (including a cover of The Smiths’ classic “Please Please Please”, Let Me Get What I Want) manage to create a soothing candle-lit atmosphere, and they are so well performed and produced that only capture the best elements of a live performance (organicity, groove, all the small, beautiful nuances of a live set).
Definitely give this a listen!
