Neil Young has revealed to the public that he has been sober for the past year. The singer revealed that he gave up drinking and smoking marijuana in order to write his memoir, Waging Heavy Peace, which is due to be released next month.
Speaking to the New York Times, Young said, “I did it for 40 year. Now I want to see what it’s like not to do it.”
He added: “The straighter I am, the more alert I am, the less I know myself and the harder it is to recognize myself. I need a little grounding in something, and I am looking for it everywhere.”
In the interview, Young also implied he didn’t imagine himself being a musician forever, saying: “I don’t think I’m going to be able to continue to mainly be a musician forever, because physically I think it’s going to take its toll on me – it’s already starting to show up here and there.”
In the meantime, Young will taking his healthy liver on tour with Crazy Horse this fall throughout the US and Canada in an effort to promote their latest release “Psychedelic Pill”
