A new report from MusicMetric claims that Americans used the popular torrent site BitTorrent to illegally download 759 million songs in the first half of this year alone.
The most active city for illegal downloading was listed as Gainsville, Florida with other small towns such as Albany, GA; Fairbanks, AK; Lexington, KY; and Tallahassee, FL following close behind.
The report also listed YouTube as the most popular website for listening to music. If trends like this continue, America could surpass 1 billion illegal downloads by the end of the year, and that’s only taking into account BitTorrent’s service.
Think about all of the other services out there that people use to illegally download music. It’s staggering to think what the true numbers could be, if every site was taken into account.
This report also only tracked America’s usage of illegal downloads. Imagine what the numbers would be for the entire world.
In any case, this clearly shows illegally downloading is here to stay, and is only getting stronger. Sorry iTunes.
